Silver Coins
Which silver coins can I sell?
Physical Gold buys a range of recognised British and international silver bullion coins.
These can include Silver Britannias, Silver Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, American Eagles and Austrian Philharmonics, subject to verification and current buying requirements.
We can also consider other silver coins, including some older and collectable issues.
If you’re unsure whether we can purchase a particular coin, call 020 7060 9992 before sending it to us.
How much are my silver coins worth?
The value of a bullion silver coin is primarily influenced by the amount and purity of the silver it contains and the current silver price.
The price we can offer may also reflect the particular coin, its condition, market demand and whether it has value beyond its underlying silver content.
For example, a standard 1oz bullion coin will generally be valued primarily according to its silver content and current market conditions, whereas a rarer or collectable coin may need to be assessed differently.
You can check the underlying live silver price before contacting us for a firm price.
Selling Silver Britannias
Silver Britannias are among the UK’s best-known silver bullion coins and have an established secondary market.
Modern 1oz Britannias contain one troy ounce of fine silver. Because they are British legal tender, qualifying Silver Britannias are also exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.
We buy Silver Britannias in a range of sizes and years, subject to verification and current market conditions.
Contact us for a live price if you have Silver Britannias you would like to sell.
Selling international silver coins
Physical Gold also buys recognised international silver bullion coins, subject to current buying requirements.
These may include Silver Krugerrands, Canadian Maple Leafs, American Eagles and Austrian Philharmonics.
Unlike qualifying British legal-tender coins, international bullion coins do not generally benefit from UK Capital Gains Tax exemption.
If you have an international silver coin that isn’t listed on the site, contact us before sending it and we can confirm whether we are able to provide a price.
Bullion coins and collectable silver coins
Not every silver coin should be valued purely according to its silver content.
Standard investment bullion coins are generally valued primarily according to the quantity of silver they contain, the current silver price and market demand.
Some older, rare or limited-mintage coins may also have numismatic or collectable value. Their year, rarity, condition, mint and collector demand can therefore affect their value in addition to the underlying silver.
If you think your coins may have collectable value, let us know when requesting a price so they can be assessed appropriately.
Does VAT affect selling silver coins?
Physical silver coins purchased for delivery in the UK are generally subject to VAT when bought new. However, the VAT originally paid should not be confused with the bullion resale value of the coin.
If you’re selling silver coins as a private individual, you do not simply add 20% VAT to the current silver value to determine what your coins are worth.
The price a bullion dealer can offer will instead depend on factors including the coin’s silver content, the silver price and current market demand.
If you are buying silver rather than selling, you can explore our silver coins or our VAT-free silver bars held in bonded storage in Zurich.
Capital Gains Tax when selling silver coins
Capital Gains Tax treatment depends on the type of silver coin you own and your individual circumstances.
Qualifying British legal-tender silver coins, including Silver Britannias, are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents.
International bullion coins such as Silver Krugerrands, Maple Leafs and American Eagles do not generally benefit from the same UK exemption. CGT may therefore need to be considered if those coins are sold at a gain, depending on your circumstances and applicable allowances.
Do I need the original packaging?
Many bullion silver coins can be bought and sold without their original presentation packaging.
If you have the original capsules, packaging, certificates or other documentation, however, keep these with your coins – particularly if you are selling limited-edition or collectable products.
Avoid cleaning or polishing coins before selling them, particularly older or potentially collectable coins, as this can affect their condition and potential value.
If you’re unsure, contact us before doing anything to the coins.
Selling silver coins stored with Physical Gold
If your silver coins are already held in secure storage through Physical Gold, you do not need to arrange for them to be delivered to you before selling.
Contact our team to obtain a live price and initiate the sale. The relevant selling instructions can then be completed without you having to transport the physical silver yourself.
For more information about our storage arrangements, see delivery and secure storage.
Our Silver Buyback Guarantee
Physical Gold offers a Buyback Guarantee on qualifying silver bullion originally purchased from us.
This means customers who have purchased qualifying silver coins from Physical Gold can return to us when they decide to sell. The amount offered will depend on the silver price, the particular coins and prevailing market conditions at the time of sale.

Sending your silver coins to us
Please do not send your silver coins before obtaining and agreeing a live price and obtaining the correct return address.
Once your sale has been confirmed, we’ll provide instructions explaining how the coins should be sent or brought to us.
Silver can become relatively heavy when selling larger quantities of coins, so it is particularly important to follow the agreed packaging, insurance and delivery instructions.
Once received, your coins will be checked and verified before payment is made.
Selling part of your silver coin holding
You don’t necessarily need to sell your entire silver holding at once.
Because silver coins are held in individual units, you can choose how many coins you wish to sell while retaining the remainder of your holding.
This divisibility is one of the practical differences between owning individual silver coins and holding the same quantity of silver in larger silver bars.
